The West Cork town of Bantry is a town celebrated in song and legend. It became
a popular tourist location after it was visited by The Prince of Wales in the
1880's, and for many years, the same route, which also takes in Glengarrif and
Killarney, was travelled by tourists keen to enjoy West Cork's glorious vistas.
More
recently, Bantry has become famed for such diverse pastimes as the Sheep's Head
walking route to its south, Garnish Island to its north, and, in the wonderful
setting of Bantry House, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and the traditional
music festival, Masters of Tradition. Bantry is visited by great numbers
on its colourful Fair Day, a market which takes place on the first Friday of every
month. The West Cork landscape is renowned for its unique, unspoilt beauty,
small, colourful towns and villages, and a gentle, pastoral pace of life. Wind
your way along the West Cork coast, from Kinsale through Clonakilty and on to
Bantry, and you encounter a magical regiona of undulating fields, quiet bays and
harbours, small ports and peaceful places. From Bantry, you can meander down the
glorious Sheep's Head peninsula, or else choose the rugged beauty of the Beara
Peninsula, before heading back to town. |
